His Eminence Metropolitan Agafangel’s Visit to South America.
Metropolitan Agafangel arrived on July 30, 2009, at the airport in Sao Paulo, Brazil, where he was met by the Most Reverend Ambrose, Bishop of Methone (Old Calendar Greek Church), who had arrived earlier, the Most Reverend Sofroniy, Archbishop of St. Petersburg and Northern Russia, Archpriest George Petrenko, Administrator of the South American Administrative District, Archpriest Constantine Bussyguin, Rector of the Church of St. Nicholas, and some of his parishioners, and Protodeacon Vasiliy Yakimov, who arrived from Australia.
All the clergy served the Vigil together the next day. On Saturday, August 1, 2009, on the feast day of St. Seraphim of Sarov, they served in the newly-renovated church in the city of Carapicuiba. This was the feast day of that church and the first service there, since the renovation of the church and the construction of a new iconostasis was completed. A trapeza was held after the service.
On Saturday, August 1, 2009, all the clergy served the Vigil in the Church of St. Nicholas and the liturgy on Sunday. On Sunday, they celebrated the 70th anniversary since the founding of the church (the actual date was earlier in the week). During the Divine Liturgy, Metropolitan Agafangel awarded Fr. Vladimir Petrenko the right to wear a gold pectoral cross, elevated Subdeacon John Yakimov to Deacon, and tonsured a parishioner of the church, Roman Juanemura-Ramirez, a Reader. A festive lunch was held at a nearby hall, attended by 290 people.
On the evening of Monday, August 3, 2009, Metropolitan Agafangel tonsured Archpriest George Petrenko a monk with a mantiya and the name Gregory, in honor of St. Gregory Palamas.
On August 4, 2009, Metropolitan Agafangel left for Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay, to visit the Church of the Holy Ascension. There he met with the Rector, Mitred Archpriest Vladimir Schlenew, and the parishioners.
On August 5, 2009, Metropolitan Agafangel arrived in Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina, to stay in the rectory of the Church of the Holy Trinity. He met with the clergy of the church; Archpriest Valentin Iwaczewicz, Fr. Alexander Iwaczewicz, Fr. Michael Burduk, and Deacons Igor Baratov and Konstantin Burda. Metropolitan Agafangel and Archpriest Vladimir met with Doctor of Theology Vladimir Vladimirovich Shostak, an elderly parishioner of the Church of St. Sergius, who had recently celebrated his 104th birthday. Vladimir Vladimirovich, who remains bright and alert, reminisced of his days in the school of theology and also gave his opinion of events in our Church.
On August 6, 2009, Metropolitan Agafangel served a moleben honoring the 50th anniversary of the Church of St. Sergius, along with Mitred Archpriest Vladimir Schlenew, Fr. Alexander Iwaczewicz, Fr. Michael Burduk, and Deacons Igor Baratov and Konstantin Burda. Trapeza was held in the church hall after the service, where Metropolitan Agafangel spoke with the parishioners.
On August 7, 2009, Metropolitan Agafangel returned to Sao Paulo. On August 8, he served a panikhida for the Most Reverend Feodosy at a cemetery in the city.
That evening, at the end of the Vigil in the Church of Holy Trinity in Vila Alpina, the nomination of Hieromonk Gregory (Petrenko) as Bishop of Sao Paulo and South America took place.
On the next day, Sunday, August 7, on the Feast Day of Holy Great Martyr and Healer Panteleimon the chirotesiya of Hieromonk Gregory (Petrenko) as Bishop of Sao Paulo and South America was conducted by Metropolitan Agafangel, Bishop Ambrose, and Archbishop Sofroniy.
A festive trapeza was held in the church hall after the liturgy.
